Disconnected

For the past week I have had no Internet access in Cuba. To be fair I really haven’t missed it to much consider I was at the pool so my phone was in my room all the time. The first few days I had to stop myself from going to my usual applications.  Habit to check twitter, facebook and then send out messages to my girls.  After the first few days I actually didn’t even think about it.

The big thing that I noticed was when we split up we had no way to find each other. Couldn’t just send a text to say where they are. Surprisingly I realized how much I rely on my phone to keep in touch. So either walking the resort or waiting in an area until we found each other became a regular occurrence.  With no phone I also had no watch, so having no way to track time was a freedom that I haven’t had in a while as well.  Only time we had to worry about be at a specific spot was for the few dinner reservations.  Outside of that we just made sure we found food on regular basis and lounge at the pool bar rest of the day.

I missed chatting with my girls.  More after I was able to get on for a 30 mins later in the week. When I was sick for those two days and alone in my room I was isolated. Everyone else was off having fun. And since there is no way to communicate by phone down here it was frustrating for me.  Normally I would chat with anyone that is available, but with no data it made it impossible to do it.  So after being down for two days, and feeling very isolated although I did figure out why I was ill.  Keeping intake of fluids is so important, and not just alcohol.  Not anyone’s fault, but at least I know for next time on how to make sure I don’t get ill like that again.  I missed out on two very fun nights, with opportunities that I will not be able to have again.

Going without internet access also means I had no news.  I don’t watch any tv even at home about the news.  Feeling disconnected from what is going on in the world had me a bit lost.  More so when gaining access to internet for that short burst.  I rely on the internet for all my information.  We  got our news through word of mouth or the tv news channel in spanish.  Like how there was snow in my home town during the week (although we were giggling about that when we heard it).

I am glad to be home.  Missing the warm weather and the routine of meeting up and going to the pool was a bit odd the day after we got back.  The hot chicks walking all around me, along with the not so hot too!  As much as I was disconnected I connected with a lot of people and because of that the trip was so much better.  Even being out of the loop from the world, we had our own little world at the resort that we connected with and I will miss that as much as I missed not being online.  Hopefully our next trip (yes we are planning already) will be as fun.  Disconnecting for the week is healthy.  Makes you appreciate who your friends are and the new friends that you make.  The good thing is now we have more friends we can talk to online.  To all the new friends thank you.  The trip wouldn’t have been the same without meeting you all.
